Umling La

We will share with you on the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth days in our blog about our journey from Pangong Lake to Hanle. And how we traveled from Hanle to Umling La. Let’s talk about that journey. In the sixth day’s blog, we talked about the beauty of Pangong Lake. In this blog, I will tell you about visiting Tso Moriri, another lake in India after the global village trip to Hanle, and finally, the experience of traveling on Umling La, the highest motorable road in India.

Seventh Day (Pangong to Hanle)

pangong to hanle

We had breakfast early in the morning and set out from Pangong towards Hanle. The distance from Pangong to Hanle is 235 kilometers. Riding on the roads of Ladakh is every biker’s dream. Ladakh is a place where you can find the best and the worst roads on Earth, with its various types of mountains. When you come to Ladakh, you’ll see it according to the season. Ladakh shows its different faces – sometimes rugged, sometimes straightforward, sometimes rain-soaked, sometimes lush green.

Another big problem in Ladakh is the network issue. Another problem is with food. Especially for those who cannot eat non-vegetarian food, they have to eat vegetarian food here. There are different types of food in every place in Ladakh.

We reached Tsaga and had lunch. For those who will ride in Ladakh, I have one thing to say. Always keep some dry food with you. There are places in Ladakh where there is no bus stop, food hotel, or petrol pump within 100 to 150 kilometers. So, always keep with you bike fuel, dry food, water, and toolkit. From my personal experience, I can tell you that if you have these with you, you won’t face many problems.

Hanle

hanle

We unexpectedly arrived at Hanle in the evening, at that celestial village. We had rented a homestay in Hanle. The reason we came to Hanle: at night, through a telescope, you can see amazing celestial scenes—planets, stars, and cosmic vistas. Hanle also hosts the world’s highest observatory point. We were truly mesmerized by witnessing those celestial scenes at night.

Eighth Day (Observatory Point)

Observatory Point

On the eighth day, in the morning, we visited the world’s highest observatory point located in Hanle. It truly is remarkable. You must visit here. After observing the observatory, we returned to the homestay for breakfast and then set out to see Tso Moriri Lake.

Tso Moriri Lake

The distance from Hanle to Tso Moriri Lake is 165 kilometers. To reach Tso Moriri from Hanle, we passed through Rhongo to Nyoma, then from Nyoma to Mahe, from Mahe to Kyagar, and finally reached Tso Moriri Lake.

Most of the roads to Tso Moriri Lake were rough. On the way from Hanle to Tso Moriri Lake, we witnessed the breathtaking beauty of Ladakh. We continued our journey to Nyoma. There, we had lunch and then continued onwards to Tso Moriri Lake.

We unexpectedly reached Tso Moriri Lake in the evening. This lake is incredibly beautiful. While not as vast as Pangong, its beauty is no less. I enjoyed the beauty of Tso Moriri Lake with both eyes. We camped by the lake for the night, enjoying the starlit sky. Prior to this, we had camped in many places like Manali, Kashmir, and Spiti Valley and had dinners at various hotel restaurants.

Ninth Day

On the ninth day, we had breakfast at the hotel in the morning and then headed back towards Hanle. That day, we spent another night at the same homestay in Hanle.

Tenth Day (Umling La)

umling la

On the tenth day, in the morning, we had our regular breakfast and set off towards Umling La. It’s known as the highest motorable road in the world. There, temperatures can sometimes drop to minus 12 degrees Celsius. Since there’s no Google map for the road from Hanle to Umling La, we had to rely on local advice. We refueled at Hanle, where petrol cost 135 rupees per liter. The distance from Hanle to Umling La is 70 kilometers. There are two roads from Hanle to reach Umling La. However, there’s no network connectivity, which was a major challenge.

Umling La is generally very challenging due to its altitude of 19,024 feet. We interacted with locals along the way to learn about Umling La, the world’s highest motorable road. After conquering Umling La, we spent the night in Hanle. On the eleventh day, we traveled from Hanle to Leh City, then from Leh to Delhi, and finally back home.

This concludes our Ladakh journey. I’ve shared with you the challenges we faced during our Ladakh trip. We’ve also shared our experiences of riding bikes in Ladakh through our blog posts. If you plan to visit Ladakh, reading our blog is a must. Feel free to comment if you want to know more about Ladakh. We’ll provide information based on your comments. This is where I’ll wrap up our Ladakh travel blogs. Thank you for reading about our Ladakh journey.
